Christopher Helm: IDP Practitioner and Editor

Christopher Helm has spent most of his working life in intelligent document processing (IDP): building extraction pipelines, testing OCR and table accuracy, and learning where document automation holds up in production and where it quietly fails.

He has his own history in the market he now covers, and he maps the rest of the IDP field, including the small and regional vendors most analyst reports skip. He co-founded an IDP vendor that is listed in this directory. The listing gets the same treatment as every other, and no vendor pays to be listed, ranked, or refreshed.

IDP moves fast and stays consulting-heavy. It sits between plain OCR text recognition and real automation, and the thing that decides whether a process can run autonomously is accuracy, not the demo. Mapping that moving field is the work, and almost nobody does it for the small end of the market. Gartner and the analyst firms cover the vendors with the budget to be covered. The other two hundred or so providers, the specialists and the regional players, get no neutral write-up anywhere, and the big names win the search results on ad spend. This directory tries to give the small ones a fair page. It is unglamorous work and there are not many people doing it, so for now it is largely one person with an opinion and a lot of vendor profiles. That is the trade, and it seems better than the page not existing.

The market reports track consolidation, funding, product launches, and partnerships, cross-referencing vendor claims against primary sources: earnings transcripts, regulatory filings, press releases, and benchmarks. Where a benchmark is run by a vendor, it is labeled as such.
