amagno: IDP Software Vendor
On This Page
Amagno is a German document management system (DMS) vendor that, with the March 2026 release of version 8, repositioned itself as an "Agentic DMS": a platform where AI agents autonomously execute document workflows rather than simply storing and retrieving files.

AI features are cloud-only. Amagno.AI Chat, Autopilot, and Automate are not available on on-premise deployments as of version 8. Organizations evaluating amagno for on-premise use should factor this into their assessment.
How amagno document processing works
Founded in 2010 by Jens Büscher and headquartered in Oldenburg, Germany, amagno combines traditional document management with a three-pillar AI layer: Chat for conversational document interaction, Autopilot for automated classification and routing, and Automate for agentic task execution. The platform reached 30,000 users by late 2025, with headcount growing by one-third between 2021 and 2024 and annual revenue growing at 9%, according to company reporting. Focus magazine recognized amagno as a "Wachstumschampion 2026" (growth champion).
The version 8 release on March 12, 2026 introduced Amagno.AI Automate as the platform's most significant capability addition to date. Automate runs on an isolated GPT-4.1 instance with no internet access, meaning document data does not leave the processing environment. Users issue instructions in plain German or English without coding or scripting. The system handles data extraction from unstructured text, complex arithmetic, VAT ID verification, date and deadline computation, document comparison, and routing of budget exceptions to responsible parties.
CEO Büscher stated at launch: "The potential of agentic workflows has already triggered a migration wave from on-premise systems to the Amagno Cloud". That claim is self-reported and carries no independent verification, but it reflects a real architectural shift: the AI features that define version 8 are cloud-only, which changes the calculus for organizations that previously chose amagno specifically for on-premise data residency.
Amagno is developing a migration tool for bidirectional cloud/on-premise switching, but it had not shipped as of the March 2026 release.
Amagno.AI Automate: what it does
Automate is the third AI pillar of the platform, following Chat (conversational document Q&A) and Autopilot (automated metadata capture and routing). Where Autopilot classifies and routes documents based on rules, Automate executes multi-step reasoning tasks on document content.
Concrete capabilities demonstrated at launch include: calculating discount amounts and verifying VAT IDs in a single instruction, computing payment deadlines from invoice dates, comparing two document versions and surfacing differences, and escalating budget overruns to the responsible cost center. Beta testing ran for approximately six months with selected customers before the March 2026 release, according to ecmguide.de.
The billing model passes LLM inference costs to the customer via tokens, purchasable as a subscription or one-time. This is a direct consequence of the GPT-4.1 architecture: amagno does not absorb inference costs in a flat subscription fee.
Thanks to Amagno.AI, we have made the leap to intelligent process control.

amagno platform features
The platform's core differentiator beyond AI is its proprietary Metadata Magnetism technology, which captures metadata automatically on document ingestion without manual tagging. Living Documents enables clickable preview navigation through document collections, similar to web browsing rather than folder traversal.
Unlike cloud-only competitors such as Rossum, amagno supports both Business Cloud and On Premise deployment. That distinction matters less for AI workloads now: ABBYY and Hyland both offer on-premise AI capabilities that amagno currently does not. For organizations where data residency requirements prevent cloud deployment, amagno's on-premise option delivers the DMS core without the AI layer.
OCR processing is unlimited with no page-number caps, integrated with the AI layer for downstream extraction and verification tasks. The platform holds ISO/IEC 27001 certification alongside GDPR and GoBD compliance, with audit trails, role-based access control, and German data center hosting for cloud deployments.
Use cases
Invoice processing and e-invoicing compliance
Amagno's most concrete near-term sales motion ties to a German regulatory deadline. Companies with prior-year revenue above 800,000 EUR must issue structured e-invoices from January 1, 2027. Amagno supports ZUGFeRD and XRechnung formats for compliant e-invoice generation and archiving, positioning 2026 as the preparation window. Automate extends this with arithmetic verification and VAT ID checks on incoming invoices, reducing manual review steps.
Sicherheitsdienste Schmidt & Sohn GmbH, a security services company, uses Amagno.AI for workflows spanning invoice verification through order processing. Managing partner Anja Bermudo Roldán confirmed the deployment covers AI-supported process control across that document chain.
German SMB digitization
Small and medium businesses in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg have accessed government digitization subsidies to fund amagno implementations. The platform's deployment model targets organizations transitioning from paper-based processes without the implementation complexity of enterprise ECM platforms. The quick-start approach and German-language support address the SMB segment that larger vendors such as OpenText and Hyland do not prioritize at this scale.
Compliance-first document management
Organizations subject to German data protection requirements use amagno's GDPR and GoBD features for regulated document handling. GoBD compliance covers the German tax authority's requirements for electronic bookkeeping records, including tamper-evident archiving and audit trails. ISO/IEC 27001 certification, achieved by late 2025, adds a third-party-verified security baseline.
