Enterprise content management and AI-powered automation platform specializing in industry-specific intelligent document processing solutions.

Hyland

Overview

Hyland has spent the past year repositioning from document storage toward agentic workflow orchestration. That shift earned it a Leader designation in the IDC MarketScape for Worldwide Intelligent Document Processing Software 2025-2026. IDC Senior Research Manager Amy Machado specifically cited the Content Innovation Cloud's federation layer as "a major leap forward in intelligent document processing," pointing to its cloud-native architecture and natural-language-driven IDP configuration as the two capabilities that remove IT dependency for business-user setup.

Three product moves in 2025 and early 2026 define the architectural argument. In July 2025, Agent Builder let organizations create enterprise-grade AI agents for workflow automation. In August 2025, the Enterprise Context Engine and Agent Mesh added graph analytics and domain-aware pre-built agents on top of the existing Content Innovation Cloud. By February 2026, a broad platform update spanning six products — Hyland IDP, Hyland Automate, Content Federation Service, OnBase, Alfresco, and Nuxeo — extended that logic across the full portfolio. Hyland self-reported 220% growth in customer adoption of agentic content services in Q4 2025; the figure is unverified and carries no disclosed baseline, but it is the only quantified adoption metric the company has published.

Natural language is the go-to-market wedge across all three moves. Both Hyland IDP and Hyland Automate now lead with natural-language configuration, and IDC explicitly flagged this as a differentiator for reaching business users without IT involvement. No time-to-deployment or user-onboarding benchmarks have been published to substantiate the claim. Buyers evaluating Hyland against ABBYY, Hyperscience, or Tungsten Automation should seek the full IDC report for comparative scoring, which is not publicly available from the vendor announcement.

Healthcare is where the repositioning is sharpest, with two purpose-built solutions launched on March 4, 2026 and a named first customer already committed to deployment. Details are in the Use Cases section below.

How Hyland processes documents

Hyland's document processing runs on the Content Innovation Cloud, which combines content services, IDP, and low-code workflow orchestration in a single architecture. The February 2026 platform update added three concrete capabilities to Hyland IDP: AI-driven document classification, expanded file and text recognition support, and a new reporting module delivering real-time insights into processing accuracy, performance, and compliance. The reporting module's addition implies customers previously lacked structured visibility into IDP accuracy. No before/after accuracy figures or processing speed benchmarks were disclosed.

The Content Federation Service connects content across OnBase, Alfresco, Nuxeo, and SharePoint 365 without requiring data migration, enabling AI-driven insights across federated repositories. This is the architectural mechanism behind Hyland's positioning around breaking content out of silos: agentic document processing applied across repositories that previously required separate access paths.

Hyland Automate now supports AI agent creation and deployment via natural-language prompts, alongside automated redaction of sensitive information and dynamic interactive form elements. The Agent Mesh layer provides industry-specific pre-built agents with configurable human oversight, ranging from human-in-the-loop review to fully autonomous operation. The Model Context Protocol implementation connects agents to external systems. Full audit capabilities are maintained across AI decisions regardless of oversight level.

Hyland's Content Innovation Cloud and its federation layer represent a major leap forward in intelligent document processing. With a cloud-native architecture, modern user experience, and AI-driven capabilities, Hyland is well-positioned to support a broad range of IDP use cases and agentic automation workflows across the entire document lifecycle.

Use cases

Financial services

Document-intensive workflow automation with compliance audit trails is the core financial services use case. The Context Engine maps organizational content across ERP, CRM, and HR systems, enabling process automation with minimal reengineering of existing infrastructure. The Agent Mesh includes pre-built agents for financial document workflows. Acuity Knowledge Partners offers a complementary approach for teams evaluating AI-powered research automation and financial document processing alongside enterprise content platforms.

Healthcare

Healthcare is Hyland's sharpest vertical bet in 2026. On March 4, 2026, Hyland launched two purpose-built solutions: Intelligent MedRecords, which applies AI-powered document capture, classification, and data extraction to health information management team workflows using GenAI prompt-based automation design; and Intelligent Correspondence for Revenue Cycle, which automates intake and processing of revenue cycle documents including faxes, lockbox files, and emails using AI-driven workflows.

OU Health is the first named customer committed to deploying both products. Julie Barnett, Vice President of Enterprise Business Solutions at OU Health, stated the solutions "will be game-changers for our organization, automating medical record capture and classification, reducing manual work, eliminating bottlenecks, delivering accurate information to clinicians faster." Neither product has a disclosed pricing tier.

Alongside the product launches, Hyland and Tribun Health jointly showcased an AI-powered digital pathology ecosystem at HIMSS 2026 connecting pathology and radiology workflows to accelerate diagnostics. Paired with the HIMSS debuts, Hyland is building a healthcare-specific stack on top of its horizontal IDP platform, positioning IDP as the connective tissue between unstructured clinical data and downstream workflows.

Insurance

Claims processing automation, policy document management, and risk assessment workflows are served through the Agent Mesh's pre-built insurance agents. The platform's configurable human oversight options allow insurers to set confidence thresholds for straight-through processing versus human review. See also Indico Data and SortSpoke for insurance-specialized alternatives.

Government and higher education

Administrative process automation, document accessibility solutions, and institutional knowledge preservation through OnBase and the Content Federation Service. The federation layer is particularly relevant for government environments where data migration between legacy repositories is constrained by policy or infrastructure. Captova Technologies offers a complementary approach for government and defense teams requiring on-premises deployment with high-volume processing alongside document AI workflows.

Hyland Intelligent MedRecords and Intelligent Correspondence for Revenue Cycle will be game-changers for our organization, automating medical record capture and classification, reducing manual work, eliminating bottlenecks, delivering accurate information to clinicians faster.
