Overview

Founded in 2001 by Alastair Bathgate and David Moss, Blue Prism launched its first commercial product, Automate, in 2003 and coined the term "robotic process automation (RPA)" in 2012. SS&C Technologies acquired the company in March 2022 for $1.6 billion. It now operates as SS&C Blue Prism, serving financial services and healthcare sectors from Windsor, Connecticut.

The company is executing a deliberate pivot from traditional RPA toward agentic AI orchestration. At TechEx Global in February 2026, Steven Colquitt, VP Software Engineering at SS&C Blue Prism, explained the shift: "Inputs can vary, outcomes can shift and decisions depend on context in real-time." The argument is that modern enterprise workflows exceed what deterministic RPA can handle, particularly where unstructured data and real-time judgment are involved.

Everest Group analyst Amardeep Modi places Blue Prism among process automation specialists competing against Microsoft, SAP, Salesforce, and ServiceNow in the emerging agentic automation platform market.

Blue Prism products and capabilities

Decipher IDP

Blue Prism Decipher is the company's dedicated intelligent document processing product. It combines computer vision, AI, machine learning (ML), and natural language processing (NLP) to extract data from structured, unstructured, semi-structured, and handwritten documents. The Visual Process Designer provides a low-code development environment, and the Robust Execution Engine delivers enterprise-grade reliability at scale. Decipher integrates natively with Blue Prism's RPA layer, meaning document extraction feeds directly into downstream automation without custom connectors.

WorkHQ: agentic automation platform

WorkHQ is Blue Prism's new flagship product, entering general availability in April 2026. It is designed to sequence AI agents, digital workers, APIs, and human workers within a single governed environment. The platform includes a drag-and-drop workflow designer, exception management through defined escalation paths, enterprise security controls, and low-code tools for non-technical users.

A Forrester Total Economic Impact study commissioned by SS&C Blue Prism estimates a 330% three-year return on investment for a composite enterprise organization. Gartner forecasts that by 2028, organizations using multi-agent AI for 80% of customer-facing processes will dominate their categories, and Capgemini predicts 38% of organizations will have AI agents embedded within human teams by the same year. WorkHQ is positioned to capture that transition.

SS&C AI Gateway

SS&C developed an AI Gateway product to run large language models (LLMs) within a controlled, compartmentalized environment. Each customer's data is isolated, addressing confidentiality requirements in regulated industries such as financial services and healthcare. Rahul Kanwar, President and COO of SS&C Technologies, described the gateway as enabling "controlled use of AI and related technologies" while bringing data together from existing systems before applying AI capabilities.

Use cases

Financial services automation

Banks deploy Blue Prism for invoice processing and KYC automation, extracting data from identity documents and validating information across multiple data sources. SS&C is also building Blue Prism tools for external deployment in credit and compliance workflows. Kanwar cited automating credit agreement review and validating investor statements as active examples.

The BFSI RPA market is projected to grow from $1.17 billion in 2025 to $6.26 billion by 2031 at a 32.14% CAGR. Vendors such as HuLoop Automation take a comparable approach, combining RPA and IDP with human-in-the-loop oversight for financial services workflows. Platforms like JIFFY.ai similarly target Fortune 500 financial services with integrated RPA-IDP capabilities.

Healthcare claims processing

Healthcare providers use Blue Prism Document Automation to process insurance claims containing handwritten forms and low-quality scanned documents. The platform digitizes patient information and extracts diagnosis codes for automated claims routing, reducing manual review queues.

Internal deployment as proof of scale

SS&C's own operations run more than 3,500 digital workers with approximately 35 AI agents in production attached to those workers, generating what Brian Halpin, Managing Director of Automation at SS&C Blue Prism, describes as "hundreds of millions in run-rate savings." Kanwar noted that SS&C has kept headcount "pretty stable" over three years of company growth, attributing part of that to automation deployed across the business. These figures are self-reported and carry no independent verification, but they represent the most concrete scale data available for the platform.

Commercial vehicle and fleet operations

Blue Prism has expanded into commercial vehicle AI applications, focusing on work order automation and fleet management. Open-source platforms such as Unstract address similar no-code automation needs for teams building LLM-powered document workflows. For teams requiring on-premises deployment with no US cloud dependency, AutomationEdge offers a comparable hyperautomation approach combining RPA, AI, and IDP in a single platform.

Agentic AI: what Blue Prism says it can and cannot do

Blue Prism's candor about agentic AI limitations is notable. Halpin stated directly: "Ultimately, I think that's where the market will go. Is it ready for that? No. Why? Because there's trust, there's regulations, there's auditability, stability, security. We know LLMs are prone to hallucinations, we know they drift, and if you change the underlying model, things change and responses get different."

This positions WorkHQ as a hybrid orchestration platform with human oversight built in, not a fully autonomous system. The design reflects a pragmatic view of where LLMs add value: SS&C frames generative AI as applicable to inputs and outputs around core processes, such as receiving and producing data, building customer interfaces, and analyzing text-heavy documents, rather than replacing core accounting or compliance functions that require consistent, repeatable outcomes.

Halpin also identified a structural barrier limiting customer deployments: AI adoption within organizations is often siloed from process automation teams, capping end-to-end automation gains at 20-30%. WorkHQ's unified orchestration model is designed to close that gap by giving both teams a shared platform.

We're giving an AI agent the outcome that we want, but we're not giving it the instructions on how to complete. We're saying, 'I want this loan reviewed' or 'I want this customer onboarded.'

Brian Halpin, Managing Director, Automation, SS&C Blue Prism
